Stone Butch Blues: Blue Sky

Description

This is an illustration from a story called Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg, about a stone butch girl growing up in the 50's, during one of the worst times of discrimination and violence against gays, lesbians, and transgender people. In this scene she's attacked and raped on the football field. And while it's happening all she can think is how matter of fact it all is, and she looks up at the sky and can only think about how blue it is, despite what's happening to her.
It's a really powerful, and really amazing story~

This is such a sad story. While I've not read the story this one is illustrating, I have to commend you on your drawing. The angle you chose is quite clever. While it also censors the action it's depicting somewhat, at the same time it also illustrates her state of mind and detachment or disassociation from the ordeal she is being put through. Furthermore, the fact that we only see HER face, denies her attackers importance and makes it about HER. Because this is HER story and those rapists don't deserve the limelight. Instead, the light shines on her.

A beautiful message and very tasteful depiction of a gruesome topic, in my opinion. Kudos!
